Sprite plotting performance - how's SDX Sprites compare to D3DX DX 9's sprites?

Here's a demo of a sprite handling program I wrote (SlimDX sprites):

And here's the source I plan to update using SlimDX SpriteTextRender:
https://code.google.com/p/simple-slimdx-multimonitor-screensaver/

It'll be interesting to see the sprite count performance between D3DX DX 9 sprites and SlimDX-Sprites.

I've only just spotted this awesome project, so I know very little about it. I'd love to know how it performs compared to the old built-in D3DX sprite system.

If anyone re-implements my code and gets a FPS comparison before I get chance, please let me know!

Hi Sarah,

I haven't done any benchmarking. But I believe that the performance should be quite similar. One thing that the DX 9 implementation definitely does not do is utilizing geometry shaders. This could be a possible bottleneck of my implementation. However, generating four vertices should be similarly fast as instanced rendering. But this might vary by hardware.
